Inauguration 2001

1. Wombat - 1/16/2001 3:36:04 PM

Hey, this appeared at the bottom of the thread list! Is it just my paranoia, or did the poweres that be put it there so that no one will notice it?

2. rubberducky - 1/16/2001 3:37:03 PM

Ricky Martin, traitor

Jan. 16, 2001 | Robi Rosa's cup of life is beginning to boil again.

You may recall that Rosa, Ricky Martin's cowriter and producer, denounced the use of his song "The Cup of Life" at the Republican National Convention as a sneaky, underhanded and "perverse" way for the party to ingratiate itself to the Latino community. So it's no surprise that Rosa is none too pleased that Martin plans to perform the song at George W. Bush's inauguration.

"Singing 'The Cup of Life' at George Bush's inauguration is like playing the fiddle while Rome burns," Rosa says. "This is a very partisan act. This is a president who would have people in his Cabinet who would obstruct the exercise of civil rights, human rights, consumer rights, the right to choose, the right to be free of gun violence and the right to a clean environment. This is a betrayal of everything that every Puerto Rican should stand for."

should be a fun time - thread and event, heh

dammit, the Bat beat me here.

4. Rosetta Stone - 1/16/2001 3:37:39 PM

1. Headline should be Celebrating America's Spirit Together

5. PsychProf - 1/16/2001 3:38:39 PM

GOOD LUCK ROSE....HERE'S A START

6. Rosetta Stone - 1/16/2001 3:39:17 PM

I just spent 10 minutes reading the e-mail and starting the process and I'm already outflanked.

Outragious.

I deejay !!!

I deejay !!!

Although, I don't know what the heck Repubs dance to ?

...Do they even know how ?

9. Rosetta Stone - 1/16/2001 3:46:23 PM

Later, diva.

I'm working and already late to pick up kids at school. One has basketball practice, another going to the dentist, third is singing for her country and the twins just want to get home to watch Pokeman.

But headline must change. Mandatory. And I'm not keen on subhead.

Concerned: You're in control until I return.

10. rubberducky - 1/16/2001 3:47:31 PM

well, if it is 'Mandatory' then hop to it

11. Rosetta Stone - 1/16/2001 3:47:34 PM

I didn't do bold. Did I?

Bye.

12. PsychProf - 1/16/2001 3:48:52 PM

Time to RIP this thread.

13. Fraaankster - 1/16/2001 3:51:34 PM

Wait, PP ! Not just yet.

I just want to see if my assumption is true, about them being way behind the curve when it comes to dancing ... among other things. ;-)

14. theDiva - 1/16/2001 3:51:39 PM

Frank's the guilty party.

Okay, the thing that fascinates me the most about the inaugural is the drive people have to attend the parties. Annie Groer of the Post did this piece in the Sunday Style section which detailed how to dress for and survive the balls without freezing or losing your mind. Why on earth would anyone want to attend a party where it actually can take days to retrieve your coat from the checkroom?

15. Jenerator - 1/16/2001 3:53:01 PM

From ducky's post:

Rosa says.

This Rosa person cracks me up! She has us Republicans so pegged, we want no civil rights, human rights or consumer rights. We want no choices. We want more gun violence, and a dirty environment.

What a total moron!!!

16. Jenerator - 1/16/2001 3:54:42 PM

The head designer for Dallas' own Lillie Dodson boutique will be dressing Mrs. Bush for the event. A conservative choice. Hopefully not as bad as Hilary's giant blue muu muu she wore.

17. Fraaankster - 1/16/2001 3:55:50 PM

Deev,

Guilty of what ?

18. concerned - 1/16/2001 3:56:45 PM

Well, with nearly a decade (ance) of Democrat rule of the executive Branch ending this coming weekend, we have the son of a former president assuming the same office for only the second time in the history of the country when George W. Bush becomes the 43rd president of the United States. What should the first priorities of the new administration be? Cutting Taxes? Stabilizing our foreign policy? Improving national defense? Or something else?

19. theDiva - 1/16/2001 3:57:00 PM

Frankie

Not closing the bold tag.

Jen

There's been articles aplenty up here about Mr. Faircloth. Looks like he's pulled together a very nice ladylike number for Mrs. Bush.

20. Jenerator - 1/16/2001 3:57:21 PM

Gays in the military!!

21. theDiva - 1/16/2001 3:58:04 PM

The first priority of the new administration should be to get through all those parties without incurring massive bunions on the feet.

Oops...too early.

24. Jenerator - 1/16/2001 3:59:53 PM

I've been to the boutique and it's a popular place for socialities, philathropist, or wealthy mother-of-the-brides, and those (generally speaking) over 45. I was looking for a cocktail dress last time, but realized I was in the wrong boutique.

I sincerely hope that Mrs. Bush doesn't look too matronly.

25. rubberducky - 1/16/2001 4:00:10 PM

Re: Message # 20, Jenerator.

Gays in the military!!

wow - we agree

Bush should lift that ridiculous 'don't ask' policy right away

26. Fraaankster - 1/16/2001 4:02:07 PM

Robert,

LOL!!!

Deev,

The first priority of the new administration should be to get through all those parties without incurring massive bunions on the feet.

Or keeping their collective smugness intact afterward.

27. Jenerator - 1/16/2001 4:04:10 PM

rubberducky,

The single most important act any new president can take on is addressing gays in the military. Forget about taxes, education, or foreign policy. Hell, forget about Iraq and Israel, this is more important!

28. JudithAtHome - 1/16/2001 4:04:18 PM

How could she not? She IS matronly.

I'm going to link an article tomorrow about Michael Faircloths designs for not only the ball gown but some of her other clothes. Jen, haven't you seen a sketch of the gown? It's lovely.

29. Jenerator - 1/16/2001 4:05:16 PM

I saw the photo of him in Sunday's (?) paper with a couple of his gowns.

30. JudithAtHome - 1/16/2001 4:05:59 PM

Frankie:

Or keeping their collective smugness intact afterward.

That shouldn't be a problem at all; they've had so much practice.

31. Jenerator - 1/16/2001 4:07:26 PM

Hey, it's time to be smug. It's the inaugural ball, and our president has won the election. Why not be a little happy, you Democrats would be, and rightfully so had Gore won.

32. JudithAtHome - 1/16/2001 4:07:50 PM

Jen:

You know he also designed the new look for the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, right?

33. rubberducky - 1/16/2001 4:09:37 PM

Re: Message # 27, Jenerator.

The single most important act any new president can take on is addressing gays in the military. Forget about taxes, education, or foreign policy. Hell, forget about Iraq and Israel, this is more important!

i suppose this was sarcasm. it was your suggestion, don't forget. i just took the opportunity to point out that it'd be a nice gesture for such a compassionate conservative to stop Government sanctioned witch hunts and discrimination.

34. Jenerator - 1/16/2001 4:11:33 PM

They have a new look?

This looks fairly traditional:

35. Jenerator - 1/16/2001 4:12:23 PM

Rubberducky,

I think it's an area that should be addressed during his tenure, but not first. I was poking fun of Clinton.

36. Fielding - 1/16/2001 4:17:02 PM

Hey Jen! How's that scanning going? :)

37. JudithAtHome - 1/16/2001 4:20:20 PM

Jen:

In the article I read, it mentioned a "new look" and I also saw examples on GMT of 3 different outfits...a travel one, a usual one, and a cold weather one. They looked bland and boring to me. Maybe they were not approved; however, it's been mentioned in more than one place that he is "designer" to the cheerleaders.

38. glendajean - 1/16/2001 4:30:36 PM

A conservative choice. Hopefully not as bad as Hilary's giant blue muu muu she wore.

Funny you should say mumu. Mrs. Bush the Younger got quite a ribbing on her first DC outing, visiting the White House a few weeks ago. Dowdy was one of the kinder descriptions. Mr. Fairchild swears it wasn't one of his designs and that he has encouraged her to ditch the outfit.

39. JudithAtHome - 1/16/2001 4:32:47 PM

GJ:

But his designs are dowdy, also...that blue and gray number she wore when GW accepted his "selection" in the well of capitol...I don't care is it was Italian cut velvet, it looked like WalMart.

40. JudithAtHome - 1/16/2001 4:33:54 PM

Sheer capitulation.

Thy cup is full, of nothing. But to make people feel better about themselves in a clear need indeed is worthy.

46. Jenerator - 1/16/2001 5:50:56 PM

Thanks Dan, you're racking up more and more brownie points! I have done PR work for the cheerleaders, but I've never been one. Maybe this year? Tryouts are this April.

Hmm. Funny how the Inauguration 2001 thread has descended so rapidly into a cesspool of exploitative images. I wonder if this is just a glimpse of things to come in the Bush II administration. Which way do Republican hemlines go again?

52. labwabbit - 1/16/2001 6:45:27 PM

58. Rosetta Stone - 1/16/2001 7:25:41 PM

Hard-working, excited parents of our talented singing school children are seeing first-hand the corruption of a NEA school.

Here's the latest. Usually parents are chaperons for school events off campus. Not this time for the Inauguration concert at the Lincoln Memorial Thursday evening. Only the teachers will get to be backstage with the chorus.

We have to be out in the crowd three, four hundred yards away. (if we're lucky)

It's outragious because almost all the teachers are Democrats---but what the NEA wants, the school administration does.

No one wants the teachers to go out on extended "sick leave" in order to prove their clout.

One angry parent told my wife tonight she's thinking of reporting it to the newspaper.

59. DanDillon - 1/16/2001 7:33:33 PM

The Lincoln Memorial. Thursday afternoon/eventing starting at 4 PM.

More tomorrow as my daughter gets info. I posted a long piece about Andrew Weber's song in the Music thread yesterday.

My daughter (who isn't the lead singer, although she got be if she didn't also play softball and basketball for the school) claims that her heated tent will be right next to Ricky Martin.

(Visions of The Brady Bunch where all the teachers go crazy of Davy Jones singing on stage.)

66. ycmeehan - 1/16/2001 7:40:34 PM

People are going to have to help me with publishing pictures.

Supposedly, K's chorus (all the kids will be wearing special sweatshirts with the school's name HERBERT HOOVER on them and cowgirl scarfs) will be the second group of performers. You can see it on C-SPAN.

Oldest son (let's call him C) is also going to be part of Inaugural events on Saturday. Boy scouts are back in style with the Republicans. No more reason to be embarrassed about them.

I was hoping his scouts would be on Capitol Hill for the speech but he's going to be positioned at White House for parade. Then he goes to a special party.

Isn't life GRAND...?

75. ycmeehan - 1/16/2001 7:52:27 PM

On the serious front, who will the Repubs parade to entertain us for the big gig ? The Clintons gave us Fleetwood Mac. Will the Dubyas try once again to show us how inclusive the Republican Paty is by Rufusizing, or gospelizing us to no end, or will they bring out who I fear they will, The Allman Brothers singing Sweet Home, Alabama ?

80. jexster - 1/16/2001 8:00:48 PM

The question of the next four years is how a president who can't talk his way out of a paper bag can get anything difficult through a sharply divided Congress.

Hail to the thief who has stolen this election,

Rosie:

Unfortunately, I won't be around for the inauguration. The wife, daughter and I are leaving on Friday for Algore's home state for 5 days so I can get my award.

Daughter's very excited about getting to meet Martin Luther King III (who will be the guest speaker at the awards banquet) - they've been learning about the civil rights movement this month, and she told her classmates she'd get his autograph and have her picture taken with him. The wife and I had been debating whether to just get up and walk out if he starts griping about the election, but now I guess we'll have to stay put come hell or high water. The things you (potentially) put up with for your kids...

Oh well.

I'm bringing a limited edition, gold-plated Bush Lone Star pin (the twin of which I will be sporting as a tie tack), which I will present to the guy who will present me my award - he was a big Gore backer, and worked on the Tennessee election committee.

Good luck, and if I can sneak away and get online, I'll try and post from there.

Rosie:

After all your yammering about this thread, I had hoped to see a little more meat in it...with your insider connections, you should be able to keep this place humming.

I realize you have to work but give us a little news here...won't take long.

119. jexster - 1/17/2001 11:41:53 AM

Folks here make no bones about it: The inauguration of local boy George W. Bush is the biggest excitement to hit town since Baby Jessica fell down that well 13 years ago

JAH...

As unofficial co-moderator, I must take up the cudgles..

120. JudithAtHome - 1/17/2001 11:43:50 AM

Carry on, Jex...

121. jexster - 1/17/2001 11:43:55 AM

Danke schoen, O my Rosie, Danke Schoen...

Something you'll NEVER see in California (why I hate Texas reason 43,750)

123. Rosetta Stone - 1/17/2001 12:28:39 PM

Okay, I'm at lunch, been banned once more from TT.

Interesting article in today's WP's Metro section about where the Gores are moving to. I told you that Tipper wouldn't live in Tenn.

The WP's hard copy includes picture of her parents' house and I was going to try to place it here but it looks like online version doesn't include the old-fashioned red brick Tutor. It brought back memories because it looks a lot like the home I grew up in outside NYC. Unfortunately, we no longer own it.

If anyone can find the picture and place it here, please do.

Not the White House, but a Very Nice House

124. JudithAtHome - 1/17/2001 12:30:37 PM

What, they're going to teach in the house? I think you mean Tudor.

125. theDiva - 1/17/2001 12:30:44 PM

Tipper's folks live next door to one of my colleagues. They're apparently a very nice couple.

126. Rosetta Stone - 1/17/2001 12:36:13 PM

Don't be cute, juDY. Just find out how to get the Tudor-home picture here. It's bringing back memories.

By the way. K, our own diva daughter, gets to meet Andrew "pugface" Weber today and a tour of the facilities.

127. JudithAtHome - 1/17/2001 12:39:27 PM

Are you speaking of Andrew LLOYD Weber? I think he might correct you in his prissy Brit accent if you referred to him as Andy Weber.

Sorry, and I mean that truthfully, I can't post photos from my computer nor am I able to find the pic you were referring to...I ouldn't find the fashion photos for my link, either.

128. Cellar Door - 1/17/2001 12:45:17 PM

129. JudithAtHome - 1/17/2001 12:49:34 PM

Great piece, Cellar.

130. Jenerator - 1/17/2001 12:51:08 PM

jextser,

Is that because there's not a Midland, California?

131. Rosetta Stone - 1/17/2001 12:51:31 PM

With very few exceptions, the DC news media/press corps are going to be shut out by the Bush administration, CD. The ultimate insult: Bush doesn't watch their shows and doesn't care what the pundits say.

Very soon, they're going to start calling the Bush people "boring." I expect that the cable news shows will be the first to feel the famine.

132. jexster - 1/17/2001 12:55:07 PM

Anyway, it's true, the election result is good for me. Bush is this stable hard target. It's as if Quayle had won. Plus you have the wonderful narrative of how he got where he now is. It took his brother, his father, his father's friends, the Florida secretary of state and the Supreme Court
to pull it off. His entire life gives fresh meaning to the phrase
'assisted living.'

Gary Trudeau

133. jexster - 1/17/2001 12:56:45 PM

Not that I know of Jen....not that it would matter...the Bastard Imbecile of the US (BOITUS, as in COITUS - clever huh?), the Moron-in-Thief is persona non grata here....

134. rubberducky - 1/17/2001 12:58:27 PM

The ultimate insult: Bush doesn't watch their shows and doesn't care what the pundits say.

that's because there's always the Cartoon Network from which to choose; either that or the Playstation 2 which i'm sure Mr Bush already has.

135. jexster - 1/17/2001 12:59:24 PM

136. Jenerator - 1/17/2001 1:19:15 PM

jexster,

Channel all of that foaming-at-the-mouth negative energy and pray for Bush. If he's that bad to you, do something constructive. Otherwise it just makes you look like a freak, fringe Democrat.

Honestly, pray for the man. Pray that he'll change into more of a humanitarian (if that's a desire of yours).

137. rubberducky - 1/17/2001 1:23:19 PM

what are your prayers for Mr Bush like, Jen?

138. Rosetta Stone - 1/17/2001 1:24:44 PM

Jen: As you might remember, I didn't like Bush this time last year. For lots of other reasons, I was caught up with Bradley and McCain.

But I liked it when Bush said in a debate that his hero was "Jesus" and how Christ had changed him. He actually said "Jesus Christ" without being embarrassed.

Of course the media howled, but it was the first thing that he said that got me interested in the guy.

139. JudithAtHome - 1/17/2001 1:24:54 PM

I've no intention of praying for the man, Jen, but it's nice of you to think that might help.

Bush doesn't watch their shows and doesn't care what the pundits say

That's because he probably can't understand what they mean.

140. Rosetta Stone - 1/17/2001 1:27:20 PM

On the other hand, juDY, there is nothing worse than watching cable news all the time.

From one who has done so, I can say, it's almost all junk.

141. Jenerator - 1/17/2001 1:28:58 PM

Rubber,

I prayed for both Gore and Bush that whoever won the election would be a good leader for our country. I asked specifically for honesty, integrity, willingness to learn, and a desire to reach people in need. I prayed for peace and unity in our country as well as a united and strong voice to the world so that others will see us in a positive light.

142. JudithAtHome - 1/17/2001 1:29:44 PM

Oh yes, it's much better to play video games all the time....more like the real world out there, at least.

143. JudithAtHome - 1/17/2001 1:31:18 PM

Jen:

strong voice to the world so that others will see us in a positive light.

I'm afraid that is a lost cause; they see us as fools.

144. Rosetta Stone - 1/17/2001 1:41:47 PM

I've heard bitter Democrats say over and over again that GWB plays video games all the time. But I've never seen anthing on the topic in real print.

I know he's an ESPN guy and loves baseball profiles/stats, but video games. Which ones?

145. Jenerator - 1/17/2001 1:42:11 PM

Judith,

I don't think that's true. People are always judgmental about other countries, but for the most part, I believe that America is admired, envied or hated, and definitely taken seriously. More so now that our new president promises to restore military might and personal integrity.

The British thought we were foolish based on what they knew of *Clinton's* philandering, but at the same time, they had a deep love and respect for this country.

146. JudithAtHome - 1/17/2001 1:47:44 PM

Rosetta:

I've heard bitter Democrats say over and over again that GWB plays video games all the time. But I've never seen anthing on the topic in real print.

It was widely reported in many places; Time magazine did an in-depth story on "his day" and they reported it; many places too numerous to mention reported it. Maybe if you watched more cable news, you'd know things. :-)

147. JudithAtHome - 1/17/2001 1:48:30 PM

Jen:

We have a differing opinion on this subject, evidently.

148. Rosetta Stone - 1/17/2001 1:57:03 PM

Okay, BIG NEWS. My wife just e-mailed me an announcement from the school regarding tomorrow's performance.

"For the Thursday performance we will leave Hoover at 1:00, arriving at the security area of the Lincoln Memorial before 2:00. We will be led to a heated tent where we will wait for our stage call at 5:00.

That means we will have 3 HOURS of time for the students to sit and wait. This will be a great time for each student to work on homework and assignments, including a required journal writing assignment. Teachers/chaperones (oh, that's right, no chaperones are need for this event, thanks to the NEA) will be available to help with homework!

BOOKBAGES WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE TENT. However, students will not be allowed to bring electronic games, Walkmans, etc.

While we are waiting for our stage call, we will need to have dinner. Again send a sandwich, in a bag that is clearly labeled. We have all the drinks, fruit, candy, etc. for the kids.

What to wear:

White turtleneck shirt
Black slacks/jeans
Black comfortable shoes
Black warm gloves
White sweatshirt (provided by school)
Red, white and blue bandana (provided by school)
Layered clothing under sweatshirt

CNN's Larry King will introduce us.

question for the host:

where is the 'essay' supposedly written by your child that you used as a reason for the existence of this thread?

151. JudithAtHome - 1/17/2001 2:11:27 PM

Ducks:

It has yet to be written...it's supposed to be about the "experience" of seeing the President Select become the President By Default.

Right, Rosie?

152. Rosetta Stone - 1/17/2001 2:15:44 PM

duck: If you had read the piece from the school principal (with the typo of bookbags), asshole, you'll see that K has to do a journal piece that I hope to get in on Friday.

C, the boy scout, supposedly is doing an article for his prep school newspaper. He doesn't see action until Saturday. For the record, he is resisting the assignment.

But, I'm only doing this thread to get brownie points with wabbit for the next one---TRUE CONFESSIONS

153. JudithAtHome - 1/17/2001 2:22:44 PM

You can forget True Confessions, bucko....ain't gonna happen.

154. rubberducky - 1/17/2001 2:23:03 PM

perhaps all the bold disguises the fact that your 'big news' update doesn't mention this so-called essay.

and, if you think THIS thread is scoring any points thus far, you are a more pitiful and diluted man than i originally thought.

155. theDiva - 1/17/2001 2:25:21 PM

well, I think it's very, very cool that the Stone munchkins are in on this deal. Whatever you think of GWB (and AFAIC, the jury is still out on him because I firmly believe FATHER STEVE WAS ROBBED), having one's child perform at the inauguration is very special.

156. PelleNilsson - 1/17/2001 3:01:50 PM

What is this inauguration anyhow? I mean apart from Bush being sworn in as President. Is there a set program which is followed every time or does each President make up his own?

158. SnowOwl - 1/17/2001 3:07:33 PM

Where has 157 vanished to?

159. theDiva - 1/17/2001 3:07:43 PM

166. Rosetta Stone - 1/17/2001 8:19:58 PM

SnowOwl: I'm also wondering what happened to #157.

I've just returned from the Lincoln Memorial in DC where we saw the dress rehearsal. They did the set three times. Jessica Simpson is singing with the Hoover middle-school kids. Beautiful girl.

While we were there the Secret Service arrested five people for trepassing. Handcuffs and all. Those guys are serious.

More tomorrow morning.

167. concerned - 1/17/2001 8:21:40 PM

Re. 166 -

Did any of the people arrested look like jexster or Sphincter?

168. Rosetta Stone - 1/17/2001 8:31:09 PM

No, they were young men wearing 10-speed bike clothings with backpacks. Didn't look dangerous (whatever that means). Just stupid and stunned for getting caught for something as stupid as trying to get on the stage.

There are fences everywhere. Everything is like a maze. Very hard to get from point A to point B without climbing over a fence or two.

They wouldn't allow the parents on the stage either but we were close enough to see everything and they have huge TV screens everywhere on the mall. (So big that they give off heat!)

First time I've been to the Korean War Memorial. Powerful images.

Van Morrison Won't Play Inaugural Gala

Irish rock and soul legend Van Morrison will not perform at George W. Bush's inaugural festivities on Thursday, despite indications from the Bush Presidential Inaugural Committee that he had been on the schedule.

Morrison never had any intention of playing the Celebration of America's Spirit Together gala, his label, Virgin Records, said in a statement. The inauguration committee could not be reached for comment on Wednesday (January 17). A week ago, a spokesperson for the committee confirmed a lineup for the event, reported by the Associated Press, that included Morrison.

Ricky Martin, Jessica Simpson and country duo Brooks & Dunn are scheduled to perform at the party at the Lincoln Memorial, along with Wayne Newton, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Charlotte Church.
(Capitol Hill Blue)

170. Rosetta Stone - 1/17/2001 9:52:58 PM

As a big Van Morrison fan, I'm very disappointed. I hope he didn't back out of the concert because his record label was threatened by blacklisting by Hollywood Criminal Party mobsters for his performing.

Somehow I doubt it and think he's just a dumb Irish mick who didn't want to leave his Ireland manor where he lives year round. I'll miss him, thou, because I've never seen him perform live.

My son just came home from night-driving school course to find out that his sister spent three hours today with Jessica Simpson.

Finally, he's impressed with her singing!!

171. Jonesatlaw - 1/18/2001 12:00:37 AM

My faith in Van Morrison has been restored.

Stone- congratualations on your children's participation in the inaguration. I hope that they enjoy their opportunity to not only witness history, but participate in it.

172. Dusty - 1/18/2001 9:04:08 AM

I'll second (or third) the comments of Diva and Jonesatlaw.

Should be a memory of a lifetime. Hope it all goes well.

173. JudithAtHome - 1/18/2001 9:20:12 AM

Here's a frightening story:

Soon, Yahoos Will Abound In DC

With a Texan about to be sworn in as president, the nation's capital has developed an enthusiasm for things Texan.

Saturday's inauguration of former Texas Gov. George W. Bush as 43rd president is triggering a cultural change in a city full of people eager to embrace whoever holds power.

Washington's showplaces have certainly gotten the Texas message; downtown's new Ritz-Carlton Hotel is spending $10,000 on yellow roses, outfitting its doormen in Stetsons and putting such delicacies as "gourmet nachos" and Texas chili in the bar.

The Texification of a stiff D.C. society scene goes hand in glove, or foot in stirrup, with the switch after eight years of Democratic leadership to a Republican administration.

174. glendajean - 1/18/2001 9:57:34 AM

From today's W. Post, Reliable Source:

Preppies on Parade

George W. Bush's prep school classmates are invading the capital this weekend for an almost-37-year reunion. About half of the 235 members of Phillips Andover's Class of 1964 are expected at the "Quite the Class Inaugural Bush Bash" Saturday at the Metropolitan Club.

"Back in 1964, we used to call ourselves 'quite the class,' " Washington consultant Nathaniel Semple told us yesterday. "We thought we were a star class, and actually we have some very interesting classmates: Dick Wolf, who produces 'Law and Order'; architect Chien Chung Pei, who is I.M. Pei's son; Clay Johnson, who is Bush's transition chief, and of course George." Wolf and Pei will attend the festivities, but Bush and Johnson have yet to RSVP. (And we'd thought they were better brought up.) If the new president does drop by, he can expect to see his classmates decked out in the same blue caps, complete with the letter A, that Bush himself wore as a head cheerleader at the posh Massachusetts academy. "We're all going to be wearing them all throughout the weekend," Semple said. "It's kind of corny but it's fun."

175. JudithAtHome - 1/18/2001 10:02:07 AM

I'd love it if Bush wore that cap on the dais as he is sworn in....such a prankish lad.

176. Rosetta Stone - 1/18/2001 11:24:50 AM

Leaving office to go to Lincoln Memorial concert and fireworks.

Please watch the event. Webber's set with HERBERT HOOVER students is scheduled between 5 to 5:30 pm. est. Two songs. One is Irish protest tune without chorus. Second is Jessica Simpson with children.

Number-one daughter is tall, beautiful blonde (without the braces). Hint: You should recognize her since most of the other kids are "people of color" and aren't nearly as cute.

oh, thanks

nice hint

180. janjon - 1/18/2001 2:30:22 PM

This so-called thread is utterly insipid. Based on the Kosovo fiasco, one can't be terribly surprised. But, at least then one assumed it was mostly the fact that the so-called host was just showing how vacuous he really is. Having been to the last two (but, gee, not invited to this one), I was at least a bit curious to compare impressions. Especially re the inaugural ball(s), which were both a gas and a extraordinary event to observe, in terms of the people on the make, etc. Granted, the thing on Saturday obviously hasn't occurred yet, but it is quite clear that the nitwit's experiences will be limited to having seen his kids off to the bus that will take them to D.C. and to sitting in the so-called VIP bleachers. (Suggestion to clueless - get there REALLY early and make sure you use one of those portable potties before you go through the various entry points. Wear lots and lots of socks.

Nice that the dimwit's kids are participating, though.

Sidebar: Just what kind of community, other than one perhaps two in Iowa where the man was born, would name a school after Herbert Hoover.
Talk about insipid.

181. Rosetta Stone - 1/18/2001 2:30:31 PM

188. JudithAtHome - 1/18/2001 2:54:01 PM

Well, I must admit, given the rabidness of his quest for this thread, I had assumed Rosetta would have all sorts of things to post from an "insiders" point of view. Thrilled as I am that his blond and cute daughter is being afforded the pleasure of seeing that pompous ass Andrew Lloyd Weber up close and personal, I'd like a little more info on the goings-on in DC.

I'm getting more inside stuff from my local TV station than from Rosie. (And I expect him to rush through tonight before his wife lays eyes on this place and cull all the posts relating to his idiocy.)

192. janjon - 1/18/2001 3:17:11 PM

Judith - leaving aside the fact that Stone is not capable of discerning and then deleting all the posts that call him for what he is - an irritating loser, the fact is that there are so many that he would be bound to miss a few.

Of course, there is then the question of just what would be the acuity level of someone who married Stone.

193. JudithAtHome - 1/18/2001 3:18:55 PM

Well, I make no judgements on the lady, not having been introduced, but I do know she has my sympathy, no matter.

194. janjon - 1/18/2001 3:22:39 PM

I must admit, however, that I was surprised when Stone published an email address which, unless he is cribbing with someone, would indicate that he is employeed by Georgetown U. I have always just assumed that he was in the civil service ranks at one of the Federal agencies. Oh, well, Georgetown is large enough to have its own swarm of faceless "workers" who can get by with much internet activity as he obviously does.

195. janjon - 1/18/2001 3:24:23 PM

There will be Clinton High Schools, of course (In addition to the fair number, at least around here, named for DeWitt Clinton). And, surely one or more will think about naming their teams the Comeback Kids. Then, after reflection, this too will be scuttled.

196. JudithAtHome - 1/18/2001 3:24:41 PM

I always assumed he worked for Federal Express.

Judith,

When it comes to clothes, yep, he definitely has style. I kinda liked his outfit also. I actually like that type of Friday night wardrobe, but they are generally too expensive, and way too transient to be practical. He can afford to use something once or twice and then shitcan it. I can't.

...I'd do something with his hair, though. It was a mess! :-)

223. Al D - 1/18/2001 8:36:53 PM

I have always just assumed that he was in the civil service ranks at one of the Federal agencies. Oh, well, Georgetown is large enough to have its own swarm of faceless "workers" who can get by with much internet activity as he obviously does.
This is more pregnant with meaning than all the chads in Fl. I have often wondered where people got so much time between 8-5 to post on the Mote

I think it's great your daughter is taking a part in the festivities and you are rightly proud. I seem to remember from my early days on the Fray you mentioned having 5 children. You're no doubt a good dad and that's more important than anything else. But, nobody every accused me of being a Mensa Member either

224. Rosetta Stone - 1/18/2001 10:32:57 PM

Yes, Robert. You saw my girl. She was right behind Jessica Simpson and on the NBC tape, is in focus the entire song.

Ricky Martin spent time with the kids and gave K his flashlight tonight--and she promptly lost it.

Or, rather it slipped from her pocket while she was singing on Lincolm Memorial behind Jessica Simpson and rolled down the stage.

C, the oldest son, got his assignment tonight. His boy scout troop spends 8 hours on the White House front lawn helping VIPs on Saturday during the parade.

More tomorrow.

225. robertjayb - 1/18/2001 10:45:46 PM

.
A lovely young woman... you are rightly proud.

226. Rosetta Stone - 1/18/2001 11:50:36 PM

Thank you, robertjayb. We were given a videotape of WRC-TV's coverage of Lincoln Memorial concert and there was our K positioned between Simpson and the red-hearted Irish singer Joshy Somethingorother.

That video image makes her one of the stars in school tomorrow and may be one reason why Ricky Martin went up to her and talked to her after concert and gave her his flashlight.

Bush and Chaney and their wives also said hello to the kids and told them how much they enjoyed them.

People who live across the street are news managers at Reuters and said they told their photographers to take pictures of our daughter on stage. I'll believe that when I see them.

I think I'm more annoyed that K lost the red Inauguration flashlight that Ricky Martin gave her than she is.

Because there was no TVs, the school did something interesting with the kids while they waited backstage in heated tents. Irish citizens talked to them about how lucky we are to have peace in America as opposed to Northern Ireland. It made an impression on K since we're talking about going to back to my hometown of Kilrush, Ireland, next summer.

But, clearly this Inaugural is poorly organized. The staff people we've talked to say it's because of the headaches of the post-election campaign, that the Clinton people are not helpful, and, most importantly (notice the spin) that Bush and Cheney are much more interested in their cabinet choices than the parties.

Great article in WP today, that everyone should read.

What, No Chad and Jeremy?

BTW, I got a laugh over the Georgetown University talk. If you only knew!

227. robertjayb - 1/19/2001 12:01:14 AM

I'm sure you can be counted on not to forget that whatever went wrong is Clinton's fault. You'll be saying that a lot in the next few years.

The Gross National Product comedy troupe has Bush saying at his inauguration: "I'd like to take a moment to thank the people who voted for me: Justices Behnquist, Scalia, Thomas, O'Connor and Kennedy."....Cybersatirist Bob Hirschfeld says a popular inaugural item "is the talking George W. doll. Pull the string, and you discover it's attached to the hand of the Dick Cheney doll."...Conservative Brent Bozell hosts a funeral for the Clinton administration, with a videotaped eulogy by comedian Jackie Mason.

Note: Notice how new newspaper information that Bush actually won the "chads and dimples" recount of the recount of the recount of the recount is ignored. And how Brent Bozell is labeled "conservative" but no one else is.

238. Jadegold1 - 1/19/2001 9:40:00 AM

Personally I was surprised at the low turnout for yesterday's inauguration kickoff. Free events are usually well-attended in DC. I've seen a better turnout at Tippy's Tacos in College Park when they offer a buy one-get one free deal.

Even the VIP seats were only 80% filled. My sources say that Snippy sulked all night.

I guess second rate acts performing in tribute to a first class dunce can't draw a decent audience.

I wasn't surprised at the turnout. There's a definite pall over the city, including the Republicans. Anyone, including conservatives, with a brain and a conscience is embarrassed and really would rather skip the folderol and just get on with it.

The yahoos that are actually celebrating are the same old crazy-aunt-on-the-front-porch, free-republic types...and the grownups don't want to be associated with them, until vote time, anyway.

What's happening is, the repub power folk are opting to keep away from the spectacle in favour of low-key, behind-doors, "only our sort of folk" receptions and cocktail hours. I don't blame them - gosh, would YOU want to mingle with the likes of that (meager) crowd?

266. Jadegold1 - 1/19/2001 12:28:40 PM

Ad was correct in a previous post. DC is in a pall. Snippy simply doesn't engender the same hopes or excitement. At best, people are hopeful that Snippy won't be as bad as they suspect he will.

Even the hardcore Repug partisans are fairly glum. They are just praying that Snippy won't be too embarrassing. There are just some things one cannot spin.

You support points of view that agree with your own crabbed little view of the universe. Period. The rest of us can...(and are, according to you)...go to hell.

278. seadate - 1/19/2001 12:48:03 PM

Jade,

Hurling insults isn't my style. There are a lot of people in this country who have more fun in cut-offs eating BBQ than in a tux choking down tofu wrapped in petrified bird shit. I took your agreement with Ad as pompous -maybe I misunderstood.

279. KuligintheHooligan - 1/19/2001 12:52:39 PM

"You support points of view that agree with your own crabbed little view of the universe. Period. The rest of us can...(and are, according to you)...go to hell."

According to Jesus Christ, whom I believe, yes, if you do not place your faith and trust in him, you are destined for hell. That is correct Judith. I hope you decide someday to trust in him.

And I readily admit my intolerance of views I think wrong. Then again, I don't go trying to tout my own tolerance like you do, one of the most intolerant people in the Mote. That's the difference between you and me. I recognize my intolerance and you don't recognize your own, but are quick to point it out in others. The epitome of hypocrisy I might add.

280. KuligintheHooligan - 1/19/2001 12:54:10 PM

And Judith, again, don't project your bitter hatred of people that don't agree with you on others. I don't WANT you to go to Hell at all. I never said I did want you to. You assume that because, well, you are a hateful person and can't imagine that others are not. My sincere hope is that you find salvation in Jesus via his mercy and grace, as I and many other Moties have done.

281. Jadegold1 - 1/19/2001 12:55:56 PM

seadate,

Ad was correct. There is a distinct lack of excitement over Snippy in DC. DC is a company town and the business here is politics.

Remember, you send the politicians here.

BTW, have you ever had tofu sauteed in garlic and black beans? Beats the heck out of BBQ.

282. JudithAtHome - 1/19/2001 12:56:51 PM

283. Jadegold1 - 1/19/2001 12:57:21 PM

284. seadate - 1/19/2001 1:04:06 PM

Jade,

fwiw, I love good food and have very diverse tastes - sushi and creole are my favorites. I developed a taste for bean curd in the far east before it hit California to be renamed "tofu". - with black beans and garlic, thanks for the idea .... I may try it this weekend.

You ain't had good BBQ, my friend (oysters, Carolina BBQ, ....)- free your mind, you're taste buds will love you for it!

285. seadate - 1/19/2001 1:08:16 PM

W may get drunk and do this on the WH lawn before his term's up.

286. Jadegold1 - 1/19/2001 1:10:31 PM

seadate,

Sushi? You can't be too bad if you like sushi.

My family's store in DC's Chinatown makes and supplies most of the bean curd (tofu) used by DC's restaurants. We also roast pigs and ducks.

My favorite BBQ is the vinegar- vice tomato-based sauce kind. I think that's East (?) Carolina style.

287. seadate - 1/19/2001 1:14:11 PM

J, let's find something else to argue about.

288. Rosetta Stone - 1/19/2001 1:14:20 PM

289. Jenerator - 1/19/2001 1:16:37 PM

Wombat,

Message # 265 I sincerely hope that Bush gets the "vitriol" I dished out. You obviously have me confused with someone else, because if you recall correctly, I was fairly silent on the matter. When Clinton took office, I wasn't thrilled, but I didn't cry about it the way the Democrats seem to be. Further more, I allowed Clinton's actions to speak for themselves in a sense. It was only when he was scandalous or involved in something truly terrible that I spoke up. Even then, it wasn't too often.

290. Jenerator - 1/19/2001 1:25:09 PM

Jen:

303. Andy F - 1/19/2001 2:21:43 PM

Interesting that people don't care about the inauguration. I recall 8 years ago that most Republicans thought Bush Sr. was not nearly far enough right for them. It seems today that they only voted for W because he is not Al Gore. It's ironic that during the recount, the Gore supporters were chanting "Count the votes," while the W supporters were chanting, "No more Gore." Even the Republican shills couldn't think of anything good to say about Smirk.

304. janjon - 1/19/2001 2:22:12 PM

The difference in tone around D.C. this time as compared to the last two (especially Clinton's first) is palpable. Sure, you've got a predictable number of happy souls from the hinterlands around, doing their best to convince themselves that everyone else is as happy as they are (most of these souls do indeed seem to be from the less-sophisticated precincts of Texas). But, there just isn't any sense of a real beginning, of new ideas or that positive things will happen. Much much more the sense of retribution and what-can-we-try-to-tear-down first.

Granted, I run in rather narrow circles. But, my persona here notwithstanding, they aren't nearly as partisan as you might imagine.

Even I got asked if I would like to have a ticket or two or three to various of the public events ("just to see how the other side shapes up", etc.) And, offers of tickets to four of the inaugeral balls. The latter especially surprised me, since the yahoos really do come out for those jobbies.

The only horns I hear honking are the usual cabs.

305. JudithAtHome - 1/19/2001 2:28:16 PM

I heard from my local TV station, which is naturally, gaga over the fact a Texan is going to be in office, that eBay had tickets to the Botts and Saddles Ball or whatever it's called going for $2,000.00. I find that hard to believe, except for the part about them being up for sale.

Who do you think will be happier tonight, Clinton or Bush?

hahahahahhahaha!

306. JudithAtHome - 1/19/2001 2:28:51 PM

Boots, not Botts.

307. Jadegold1 - 1/19/2001 2:32:59 PM

My neighborhood is awash with inaugural ducats. Can't give them away.

308. janjon - 1/19/2001 2:38:07 PM

You may have been confused, Judith, from the fact that Baker (as in James's grandfather) & Botts, a highly regarded Texas law firm, threw one of the types of parties where the realGOP insiders and power brokers are congregating. Pappy was the guest of honor.

What I don't know is whether he demanded his usual $60,000 per appearance.

Here's a little more humorous truth:

Taste of Things to Come

The lack of a poet at Bush's Inauguration is a bleak omen of his administration's attitude toward culture --but then again, what poet would agree to appear?

322. Rosetta Stone - 1/19/2001 3:50:54 PM

U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler said security checkpoints along the inaugural parade route did not violate demonstrators rights and could remain in place.

With all the bad weather, I wonder how many demonstrators will actually show up.

I realize the people who do it for a living, like Rev. Sharpton, have to for the photos.

323. JudithAtHome - 1/19/2001 4:06:06 PM

Yeah, just like the people who are showing up for the festivities...

PROTESTERS STAY AWAY AS INAUGURAL PARTY BEGINS

325. janjon - 1/19/2001 4:10:05 PM

Rosetta. Don't talk to me, at least, about demonstrators at inaugerations. The last time around, I was wending my way down towards the White House on the sidewalks on the parade route (the parade itself is always boring and I wanted to get to the real stuff), when I was accosted by an ardent and loug group of anti-abortionists stationed strategically at a very narrow passage along the way. They had with them some pig fetuses drenched in what I assume was fake blood. Taunting passersby with them, very much in your face tactics, including thrusting one of said fetuses in my face. I kept my cool and said I was fascinated that they had real fetuses and asked what kind they really were. Someone actually answered me. I then asked whether they were going to have a nice barbeque after the event. No one threw anything at me, but I am sure that was because they didn't have that many little piggies with them.

326. Rosetta Stone - 1/19/2001 4:12:17 PM

You are really surprising me, Judith. This must be your worst nightmare. Local boy makes good.

To be so bitter about someone who is so bland and normal--but not be able to express it to people around you.

Glad your shrink and "husband" encourage you to post here.

327. janjon - 1/19/2001 4:16:44 PM

normal? It may be commonplace for you, Rosetta, to hang around with people or family members who take great pride in not reading or being curious about nuances, the ranges of options on so many issues, etc.

Not my idea of normal - at least for someone who has been given the Presidency and appears at least to want to go through the motions of being President.

328. JudithAtHome - 1/19/2001 4:19:47 PM

It might be difficult for my shrink to urge me to post here since he is dead but I'm sure he'd have a lot to say about your proclivities, Rosie.

And my husband thinks you're a riot.

329. bbb - 1/19/2001 4:23:25 PM

To the Washington D.C. residents and tourists :

Exihibits of Chinese painting, caligraphy, and posters are also displayed in the Mall.

He won. Gore lost. Shit happens. I wasn't crazy about W when it started. But the alternative was so evil.

And, now I must leave the office for dinner and family responsibilites. Tomorrow starts at 6:50 a.m. at White Flint Metro with 24 Boy Scouts--and then to the speech and parade.

I didn't think Ad was telling the truth about free tickets. I'm sure I'll find them somewhere, or maybe and mom and twins don't go to speech because of bad weather. Wife is already acting like a mother regarding that.

Either way we're wear lots of clothes, the next time I post Bill Clinton won't be president.

And, that's very good.

331. Rosetta Stone - 1/19/2001 4:26:25 PM

My post was to JanJon. I'm still not used to this thread being active.

Have a good weekend, Judith. I do like you a whole lot and I'm sorry sometimes that we insult each other. Tell your "husband" that he's one lucky idiot. (g)

But I must ask: You didn't kill your shink, did you?

332. JudithAtHome - 1/19/2001 4:28:23 PM

Don't tell anyone but yes, I did. In the study. With a candlestick.

333. Andy F - 1/19/2001 7:52:39 PM

From Rosetta's story: The more than 200,000 people expected to attend yesterday's gala at the Lincoln Memorial — and cause huge traffic delays as they left during the evening rush hour — did not show up, probably because of the cold, rainy weather.

The main protest ain't scheduled until tomorrow, Rosie cheeks. It's W's fans that aren't showing up. We will see if the weather keeps the protesters away. Even if it does, we here in the rest of the country intend to make enough noise to be heard in DC.

334. Andy F - 1/19/2001 7:55:31 PM

More from Rosie's story in the Washington Times: Thousands of revelers braved the chill and the damp yesterday at the Lincoln Memorial to celebrate President-elect George W. Bush's upcoming inauguration during an outdoor gala that kicked off a weekend of balls and receptions.

How do the editor at the Washington Times actually keep from falling down with all that spinning? They talk about "thousands of revelers" as if its a big deal. Only later do we find out they expected 200,000.

335. Rosetta Stone - 1/19/2001 8:03:30 PM

Hello, Andy F from TableTalk. Welcome.

I'm only here for a brief time between activies to post a weather report for tomorrow but, tell us, what's wrong at TT? It's been down for almost 24 hours? They're not supposed to go dark until May.

INAUGURATION WEATHER FORECAST: "NASTY". IS IT CLINTON'S FAULT?

336. jexster - 1/19/2001 10:40:32 PM

Counter-Inaugural Oath:

George W. Bush did not legitimately win the Presidency of the United States – he stole it.

George W. Bush lost nationally by 540,000 votes.

George W. Bush lost Florida, but enlisted a narrow partisan Republican majority of the Supreme Court to stop the legitimate statewide manual recount ordered by the Florida Supreme Court. This action subverted the Constitution, undermined the Rule of Law, and violated the sacred principle of Democracy: that every vote must count.

By stealing the Presidency in this manner, George W. Bush has already violated his solemn oath to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."

I therefore solemnly affirm that I will faithfully oppose George W. Bush's illegitimate policies and work tirelessly to restore true Democracy in America.

337. arkymalarky - 1/19/2001 11:29:02 PM

"-- but then again, what poet would agree to appear?"

Nipsy Russell, maybe?

I can't believe it's the last night for Clinton to be president. What a long, strange trip it's been. Some of you may or may not know this, but Arkansans have somewhat of a complex where Texas is concerned. In this case, though, it's better than a Razorback victory over UT. Clinton's going out with a higher popularity rating than Reagan, free and clear, with a wife in the Senate, and the great contrast seen in the inauguration between the Man from Hope and the Good Ol' Boy from Texas is enough to make any Arky proud.

338. Fraaankster - 1/20/2001 12:15:12 AM

Arky,

Bill Clinton should be paid some sort of royalties for the cottage industry of hate and divisiveness he inadvertently created. After all, he made millionaires out of the Limbaughs and O'Reilly's of the media. Where would they be without Bill Clinton ? It was said Limbaugh jumped for joy when Clinton was nominated for a second term. I wonder if his "Dittoheads" ever knew that ?
It won't happen, because we all know that the Right has the exclusive franchise on morality, honesty and virtue, but it would be quite a revealing character test on Dubya if there was some way to place him over the fire at one-twentieth the heat that Clinton took on almost a daily basis.
Pummeled, bleeding and sore, Clinton is leaving the ring with a strong chin still in place and a resilient spirit that few in any public office could take without breaking at some point. History, by far, will be kinder to him than the Clinton hatemongers were -- He took a lot of unwarranted shit!

...By the way, Barney Frank just clobbered Bill O'Reilly big time about 30 minutes ago.

The Love Song of Rutherford B. Hayes (nod to The Wasteland)

1. The burial of the chad

November is the cruelest month, breeding
Butterflies out of dead votes, mixing
Manual and automatic tabulation, stirring
Dry chad with spring rain.

Florida surprised us, coming in from Kennebunkport
We stopped when Colin Powell passed out
And drank Pabst Blue Ribbon and harassed black voters.
Texas, Texas uber alles.

And when we were children, staying at the governor's,
My brother's, he took me out for a drive,
And I was frightened. He said, Jeb,
Jeb, Hold on tight. And downed another tequila.

Madame Harris, local secretary,
—But you can call her Cruella—
Had a bad hair day, nonetheless
Is known to be the sneakiest woman in West Palm Beach
With a wicked pack of cards. Here, said she,
Is your card: the dented pregnant chad,
(Those are votes in Illinois. Look!)

Here the chad with three corners.
The chad with two votes. And this card,
Which is blank, call it one for Dubya,
Which I am forbidden to say. I do not find
The Hanged Chad. Fear death by revote.

340. jexster - 1/20/2001 12:46:14 AM

2. A game of cards

How shall I count thee? Let me count the ways?
Automatic count ...
Automatic count again ...
HURRY UP PLEASE IT'S TIME!
Manual recount of one percent of precincts
HURRY UP PLEASE IT'S TIME!
O O O that swingi-hinging door chad.
It's irrefutable
So indisputable!
HURRY UP PLEASE IT'S TIME!
In the room Ralph Nader comes and goes
Talking of the WTO.
HURRY UP PLEASE IT'S TIME!
Countywide manual recount ...
Countywide manual recount using a new standard ...
And the bulbs shine bright on govn'or dubya
and on his aggies
they keep their chad in plastic baggies
to keep them fresh.

Statewide manual recount ...
HURRY UP PLEASE IT'S TIME!
HURRY UP PLEASE IT'S TIME!

3. What the Votamatic said

Here are no votes but only chad
Chad and no votes and the snaky cord
The cord winding below between the ballots
Which are mountains of chad without votes
If there were votes we should stop and count
Amongst the chad one cannot stop or count

And the lockbox gives no shelter, the speeches no relief
And the empty chad no sign of votes. Only
There is shadow under this Votamatic.
(Come in under the shadow of this Votamatic)
And I will show you something different from either
Morning light shining through Bush votes
or evening light shining through Gore votes.
I will show you fear in a handful of chad.

Then spake the Votamatic:

DUH

Dubya: A compassionate conservative.

DUH

Dubya: A reformer with results

DUH

Dubya: A uniter, not a divider.

These ballot fragments I have stored against my ruin.

subliminable subliminable subliminable.

The Second Coming (of George Bush)

Turning and turning in the media choir
The vote does not count the voters;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mediocrity is loosed upon the world,
The chad-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The normal English sentence is drowned;
A life with at least one conviction, being bailed out
By dad's friends the main propensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image of Tempus Scalia
Troubles my sight: Somewhere in the plains of Texas
A smirk with the father's voice and the eyes of Quayle,
A life of rank and privilege as the son,
Is moving its slow lips, while all about it
Reel shadows of operation desert storm.
The market drops again; but now I know
That eight years of easy sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a dimpled chad,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Washington to be born?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Thousands of demonstrators booed the inauguration of George W. Bush (news - web sites) on Saturday, holding signs such as ''Hail to the thief'' to protest his swearing-in which took place amid the tightest security measures ever.

Columns of demonstrators, championing a broad range of causes from
abortion to electoral rights, stood on the route Bush took to the Capitol for his swearing-in and jeered as his presidential limousine went past carrying him and outgoing President Clinton (news - web sites).

Rosie...recall the good old days when you and I were a couple o randy young boyz and what we did to Nixon Agonistes

WASHINGTON (AP) - George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s motorcade lurched through the largest inaugural protests since Richard Nixon on Saturday, enduring thousands of protesters who hurled insults at the newly installed president. Some threw bottles, tomatoes and an egg and one demonstrator burned an American flag atop a lamppost.

Protesters clashed briefly with police clad in riot gear at a few flash points while Bush remained inside his armored stretch car for most of the parade up a soggy, cold Pennsylvania Avenue.

Police ordered the motorcade to slow in anticipation of some protests - at one point stopping it for five minutes- and then sped it through others.

370. jexster - 1/20/2001 9:53:25 PM

At the moment Bush was sworn in, police scuffled with protesters on the streets of Washington. Demonstrators turned out across Washington today, chanting and carrying signs displaying their anger at the contested election of President Bush.

As the inaugural parade moved down Pennsylvania Avenue, thousands of protesters mingled with supporters of Bush, waving signs that read, among other things, "Hail to the Thief," "His Fraudulency," "Fraud!," and "Gore Majority."

At times and places along the parade route, chants of the anti-Bush forces were louder than the cheers of Bush's supporters....

Bush supporters were caught up in a crush of protestors at the Navy Memorial as the motorcade passed. Police lifted a crying woman up and over the barricade to free from the crush.

Protestors raised an American flag hung upside down on the memorial flagpole, where it flew as Bush drove past.

Despite rainy winter weather in the nation's capital, protesters also congregated prior to the parade at the U.S. Supreme Court on Capitol Hill, chanting, "No Justice, No Peace!"

Earlier, just at the moment Bush was taking his oath of office, police were clashing with protesters at an intersection just a few blocks from the parade route in downtown Washington.

With a helicopter hovering overhead, the Secret Service and busloads of police, some in riot gear, blocked off the intersection, though the vast majority of the protesters were congregating peacefully.

Fuck You Moron!

Biggest Inauguration Protests Since 1973

Groups of protesters gathered at different locations throughout Washington during the day.

"I think it's important to remind the incoming administration the country does not want a right-wing mandate," said protester Mary Anne Cummings of Chicago. "They did not vote for a right-wing mandate."

More than a dozen law enforcement agencies seeking to avoid a repeat of last spring's violent protests greeted demonstrators with about 7,000 officers, miles of steel fencing and security checkpoints.

Organizers said as many as 20,000 people would take part in the weekend demonstrations, the most since President Richard Nixon's second inauguration in 1973.

'Day of Resistance'
Among protesters from the Justice Action Movement was a group of students from Ohio Wesleyan University, who wore pirate hats and carried signs reading "Bush plundered our vote."

Several major activist groups called for a nonviolent "Day of Resistance" against what they termed an "illegitimate" presidency decided by a divided Supreme Court.

Bush supporters were outnumbered by protesters who shouted "Gore got more!"

Caroline McNamara, 31, handed out bumper stickers that read "Supreme coup." Another protester carried a placard that read "Crime scene."

Don't believe the lies about most of the people at the parade being demonstrators. 85% of the people there were either pro Bush, or just out to hear the speech and see the parade.

Only about seven to 10,000 were anti-Bush. And, only nine were arrested, according to the radio. The kids ran up Penn Ave to get to other camera positions making the leftist network news producers very happy to see them. We were across the street from National Archives at Naval Circle where we witnessed some of the demonstrators.

But, like our lovable Jexster, you gotta love their passion.

Lot's more to say about but it will have to be later, much later.

Went to a great party last night in DC (but not a ball). Stayed there and was up early to morning to get tickets for special White House tour this afternoon between 3 and six. (It should be on C-SPAN)

But we could only get four tickets, not seven, for White House tour this afternoon. 2 inches of fresh snow on the ground kept the lines from being outragious this morning but they give only two tickets to each adult.

Supposedly President Bush and wife will shake the hands of all the people who got tickets. Since K got the attention on Thursday, the other four kids will do so today while parents wait outside.

As Bob Dylan sang, it's a NEW MORNING and one just has to be proud to be an American.

A very good week. A very good week.

Girl Scouts Cordon Bush Protestors

By David Ho

Associated Press Writer

Out of 7,000 federal, state and local police, it took a few dozen Girl Scouts to maintain the peace during the inaugural ceremonies for President Bush.

About 2,000 Boy and Girl Scouts from the Washington area had volunteered to help take tickets and guide people to their seats at the Capitol and along the Pennsylvania Avenue parade route.

Clad in yellow rain jackets. the teen-agers became an unanticipated face of inaugural security when about 300 protesters entering a demonstration site along the parade route occupied a large set of bleachers reserved for spectators with tickets.

As protesters bearing anti-Bush signs and banners overflowed the bleachers trying to harass the ticket holders and, hopefully getting arrested, the girls, with only limited help from several Secret Service officers on the scene, formed a cordon around the demonstrators to keep them contained.

Crissi Bailey, 17, of Silver Spring, MD, was among those in the thin yellow line.

"I think some of the protestors are being a little bit rude," she said, "but some of them are bing really nice and we're learning a lot about new issues."

"And new cuss words," a fellow scout added.

The scouts stood their ground, but shied away from confrontation. At one bleacher entrance, a protestor in a top hat posing as a ticket taker kept yelling that people should hand him their tickets.

As confused Bush supporters kept offering him tickets, scouts rushed ahead to usher them to seats. Neither the girls nor the adult volunteers could persuade the man to leave for almost an hour. He eventually wandered off.

Was it Jexster?

Inaugurations come, inaugrations go but not since Hayes have they been accompanied by mass protests against the legitimacy of the event...

In San Francisco and elsewhere in Northern
California, the streets filled with thousands of
protesters banging drums and waving signs
yesterday after George W. Bush was inaugurated
president.

As many as 15,000 demonstrators in San Francisco
-- including doctors and nurses, postal workers and
software engineers, teenagers and grandparents --
spoke out against what they called a stolen election.
Some were die-hard activists, others had never
joined a protest march before.

For those of you who'd like to relive a real inaugural celebration, please enjoy some photos from my scrapbook.

Here's the first one to whet your appetite:

Who's the guy with the "thumbs up"? Looks like my son...

397. ycmeehan - 1/21/2001 7:18:38 PM

Dan, I think.

398. don s. - 1/21/2001 7:19:01 PM

I'm pretty sure he isn't your son. I've met his mother and, well, I can't imagine a personality more divergent from what comes across under your handle, Judith. (BTW, if you follow the link, that and the other photos are captioned.)

399. ycmeehan - 1/21/2001 7:20:02 PM

No, Dwayne.

400. mgleason - 1/21/2001 7:22:21 PM

In the words of the character playing Barbara Bush in the Mad TV skit:

Nobody told me not to drink while I was pregnant. I'm so sorry!

401. JudithAtHome - 1/21/2001 7:24:54 PM

DonS:

more divergent from what comes across under your handle, Judith.

You mean she doesn't engage in "vile invective"?

402. don s. - 1/21/2001 7:42:13 PM

Exactly. Nor intolerant tolerance.

403. JudithAtHome - 1/21/2001 7:45:13 PM

Gee thanks, Don...I like you, too.

Sorry if this was posted already. It's pretty good except I don't get the part about the barricades.

The Ballad of W.
(sung to the tune of The Beverly Hillbillies theme song)

Come and listen to my story 'bout a boy name Bush.
His IQ was zero and his head was up his tush.
He drank like a fish while he drove all about.
But that didn't matter 'cuz his daddy bailed him out.
DUI, that is. Criminal record. Cover-up.

Well, the first thing you know little Georgie goes to Yale.
He can't spell his name but they never let him fail.
He spends all his time hangin' out with student folk.
And that's when he learns how to snort a line of coke.
Blow, that is. White gold. Nose candy.

The next thing you know there's a war in Vietnam.
Kin folks say, "George, stay at home with Mom."
Let the common people get maimed and scarred.
We'll buy you a spot in the Texas Air Guard.
Cushy, that is. Country clubs. Nose candy.

Twenty years later George gets a little bored.
He trades in the booze, says that Jesus is his Lord.
He said, "Now the White House is the place I wanna be."
So he called his daddy's friends and they called the GOP.
Gun owners, that is. Falwell. Jesse Helms.

Come November 7, the election ran late.
Kin folks said, "Jeb, give the boy your state!"
"Don't let those colored folks get into the polls."
So they put up barricades so they couldn't punch their holes.
Chads, that is. Duval County. Miami-Dade.

Before the votes were counted five Supremes stepped in.
Told all the voters "Hey, we want George to win."
"Stop counting votes!" was their solemn invocation.
And that's how George finally got his coronation.
Rigged, that is. Illegitimate. No moral authority.

Y'all come vote now. Ya hear?

Rosetta:

How can you possibly call this guy a boring president? I mean, if Clinton was The West Wing (or whatever that White House series is called), W. is the Mr. Bill Show. I thank you, America, for this comic relief. These four years are gunna be hys-terical.

Is it true the guy couldn't remember Putin's name in a live interview on CNN just before the inauguration?

407. Wombat - 1/22/2001 8:19:13 AM

Now that President* Bush has been installed, can we terminate this idiotic thread?

408. pseudoerasmus - 1/22/2001 8:47:50 AM

when is the inauguration?

409. Wombat - 1/22/2001 9:46:32 AM

PE:

Saturday, Jan 20.

410. jexster - 1/22/2001 11:51:14 AM

Can we terminate Rose while we're at it?

411. Rosetta Stone - 1/22/2001 7:27:34 PM

Laugh, laugh, laugh, Democrat losers. At damoron who's was educated at the Harvard Business School, our first MBA President.

Just look at how he's set up his super cabinet sharing authority and responsibility with his managers. So different from the way a lawyer would.

And like the former Democratic rising feminist star, ex-Texas Governor Ann Richards, and whiz kid/Internet creator Al Gore, please continue to underestimate George W. Bush.

Just think in seven years. He's won three elections in a row against the best the Democrats have to offer. Why don't you think it won't be four.

412. Rosetta Stone - 1/22/2001 7:28:43 PM

who's=who

413. Rosetta Stone - 1/22/2001 7:42:45 PM

Good and bad news regarding Sunday at the White House.

Mother and three children got to go in yesterday afternoon, but they missed the president and first lady. The Bushes only did it for 30-45 minutes, not the full three hours.

Disappointed but maybe we'll have other opportunities in the next eight years.

PP: I'm trying to get C and K to do their journals from last week. With the boy, it's like pulling teeth. He had a terrible time on Saturday. He had great location right on the WH but he stood in the cold rain for seven hours and it only got exciting at 3 p.m. when Bush and company showed up for the parade.

He didn't even witness the 5,000 anti-Bush protestors who Pam, the twins and I stayed with most of the time.

But C went to a Right to Life demonstration today and had a great time, especially with the news that Bush is stopping federal funding for international abortionists.

RP: If the Jews want to limit the Arab population, let the Hollywood left pay for it.

414. Rosetta Stone - 1/22/2001 7:44:21 PM

Oops. I guess it was Dusty, not PP, who wanted to know about my kids' experiences.

415. robertjayb - 1/22/2001 8:38:35 PM

.
RustlerPike,

The barricades mentioned in those lyrics refer to a police traffic stop/roadblock set up, purely by chance and without intent to intimidate, of course, in proximity to a polling site in a predominately black community.

416. Rosetta Stone - 1/22/2001 10:14:09 PM

proximity?

hahahahaha

According to the Democratic-controlled U.S. Civil Rights Commission hearings in Florida last week, the police road block was two miles away from the voting polling stations.

417. Rosetta Stone - 1/22/2001 11:08:18 PM

"It's a mistake to underestimate Bush," Clinton says

418. RustlerPike - 1/23/2001 4:05:49 AM

RP: If the Jews want to limit the Arab population, let the Hollywood left pay for it.

Sure, Loretta, whatever you say. I'm on the phone with the Hollywood Left as we speak.

419. Rosetta Stone - 1/23/2001 4:25:59 AM

Whatever it takes to solve your problem with the locals, RP.
We all wish you the best.

420. Fielding - 1/23/2001 10:37:49 AM

Hey Rosetta. Anything exciting going on at the inauguration?

421. don s. - 1/23/2001 10:41:10 AM

Still waiting for "C"'s diary entry, Rose.

In the meantime, let's summarize what we've learned from this thread.

1. Rosie thinks nonwhite children aren't cute.
2. Rosie is an anti-Semite.

.... Wait, I knew those things already! Just what was the point of this thread anyway?

422. JudithAtHome - 1/23/2001 10:45:10 AM

You forgot

3.) Rosie got to touch Ricky Martins flashlight.

423. don s. - 1/23/2001 10:46:55 AM

(smacks forehead)

D'oh, how could I have forgotten that? OK, I guess this thread was worthwhile after all.

424. don s. - 1/23/2001 10:47:38 AM

P.S. I didn't touch anyone's flashlight back in '93 (well, not anyone you would know), but I did ride in an elevator with Les Aspin.

425. rubberducky - 1/23/2001 10:47:44 AM

why?

everyone wants his bon-bon anyhow

426. JudithAtHome - 1/23/2001 10:53:01 AM

DonS:

but I did ride in an elevator with Les Aspin

Oh, you lucky dog, you!!

Best I've done is tea with Kay Baily Hutchinson.

427. don s. - 1/23/2001 11:01:09 AM

Eek! There was a particularly disturbing photo in the NYTimes over the weekend of Shrub, the new Gov. of TX, and K.B.H. showing off their cowboy boots. Sort of this
