Personally, I prefer semi-respectful dialogue to barely-discriminate posting of quotes and links.

3023. alistairconnor - 7/27/2006 5:12:47 PM

OK, you're on. What subject would you like to host a thread on.

3024. arkymalarky - 7/27/2006 5:15:46 PM

Hey Wombat!

Please do post on what's going on right now.

And on a personal level, I'm going to be teaching an AP world history class, and would really appreciate any resources you can suggest.

3025. TheWizardOfWhimsy - 7/27/2006 5:56:00 PM

Personally, I prefer semi-respectful dialogue to barely-discriminate posting of quotes and links.

Here we go again. "barely-discriminate?" Lighten up, Wombat. Not everyone has time for lengthy dialog–maybe they just want to share what they found interesting.

There's plenty of room here for it all; besides, one can easily scroll over what is perceived as detritus & flotsam.

3026. Wombat - 7/27/2006 8:15:33 PM

Wiz:

Unfortunately, that means I scroll over most of the threads that I am interested in.

Arky:

What time period does the course encompass? 1789-present?

Alistair:

If you think reviving the History thread would be useful, I am game.

I currently lurk and occasionally post on the Washington Monthly blog (Jay Akroyd and Cal Gal also post there; we are all liberal comrades against right-wing trolls), Brad Delong and Steven Bainbridge.

3027. arkymalarky - 7/27/2006 8:28:22 PM

I'm not sure yet, but it will probably be that, maybe starting a bit earlier.

I'd love it if you started a history thread.

3028. arkymalarky - 7/27/2006 8:29:25 PM

MsNo and Judith will be here any minute, and we can start up a thread pretty quickly if you're okay with it.

3029. wonkers2 - 7/27/2006 9:07:27 PM

Wombat, you might learn something if you stopped to read some of the material you are scrolling over. Perhaps you already know everything you need to know.

3030. Wombat - 7/27/2006 9:23:00 PM

Wonkers:

Not only are there other places where the same--or better--material is found, but I can read them without having to wade through some posters' repetitive and unconstructive (sometimes bordering on anti-Semitic) comments.

I have always seen the Mote as a place for conversation with long-time acquaintances, rather than information (particularly in the more political threads). When the Mote is at its best, I am often amused, and occasionally enlightened, but nothing more than that. If I want slanging with sources, the Washington Monthly does fine.

3031. jexster - 7/27/2006 9:24:22 PM

Did I hear my name mentioned again...

Thank YHWH I am just a "borderlne anti-Semite"

You have better links...show me

Through the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail
The sky cracked its poems in naked wonder
That the clinging of the church bells blew far into the breeze
Leaving only bells of lightning and its thunder
Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind
Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind
An' the unpawned painter behind beyond his rightful time
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.

Through the wild cathedral evening the rain unraveled tales
For the disrobed faceless forms of no position
Tolling for the tongues with no place to bring their thoughts
    All down in taken-for-granted situations..

Certain bruised egos of the jewish persuasionmay wish to join the conversation in Conflict on the Israel Lobby...

Just a thought in a place to bring your thoughts

Wombat..I really mean no disrespect but can we cut to the chase please?

These complaints are as tired as they are old, as disingenuous as tired.

The problem is not the links or other info. The problem is not that conversation is impossible.

The problem is that conversation can be a fearful thing. When did these complaints begin?

I'll remind you. They started at the inception of the Greatest Strategic Disaster in US History.

Now I know my weakness...I am the Door Gunner now armed with a case of Shaedenfreude Schnapps..I wouldn't want to have a conversation with me either on subject that me cared about passionately...

Door Gunner: Git some! Git some! Git some, yeah, yeah, yeah! Anyone that runs, is a VC. Anyone that stands still, is a well-disciplined VC! You guys oughta do a story about me sometime!
Private Joker: Why should we do a story about you?
Door Gunner: 'Cuz I'm so fuckin' good! I done got me 157 dead gooks killed. Plus 50 water buffalo too! Them's all confirmed!
Private Joker: Any women or children?
    Door Gunner: Sometimes!
Private Joker: How can you shoot women or children?
Door Gunner: Easy! Ya just don't lead 'em so much! Ain't war hell?

3034. alistairconnor - 7/28/2006 2:45:16 PM

Hey wimmin! [snaps fingers] Where's that History thread?

3035. arkymalarky - 7/28/2006 6:29:25 PM

Comin' right up! (as soon as MsNo helps me remember how to do it).

We were karaokeing last night and forgot about Mote Matters! And we had a BLAST, BTW, and MsNo has a FANTASTIC voice!! She could make a career in Hot Springs. She was a real hit!

Wombat, do you have a public email? Either way, we'll go ahead and get it set up.

3036. arkymalarky - 7/28/2006 6:45:57 PM

It's at the bottom of the thread list now, ready for Wombat!

3037. alistairConnor - 7/28/2006 7:10:24 PM

Yes, karaoke with MsNo is definitely on my list of Mote things to do. One day. Before I die.

Song list please! What did YOU sing, Ark?

3038. anomie - 7/28/2006 10:45:03 PM

I enjoy everyone on the Mote. I still lurk quite a bit, mostly at work, and I would miss anyone who dropped out.

And I can do a decent harmony if yer lookin.

3039. wonkers2 - 7/28/2006 11:11:23 PM

Cap'n Dirty sez, "Karaoke? I kin think of better things to do with MsNo like a moonlight cruise on the Tomater Sloop!"

3040. anomie - 7/29/2006 12:20:47 AM

But she'd like a little crooning I'm sure.
