Jen, I've been in similar situations and agree with Thoughtful's take on it. Good luck.

In case it's helpful, here's one idea: Google up "Richard Driscoll, PHD" and check out the reviews of his (old and inexpensive) book/CD set Personal Shielding. There are a lot of people who have found it useful, and it's worth a try (doesn't take much time, either).

Jen : you could also apply my technique : Live on the other side of the planet.

Well, it works for me.
(Actually, I love my family. All of them. And I'm always happy to see them. This is perhaps not unconnected to the above circumstance).

Oh, having checked, the antipodes of all of the continental US is in the Indian Ocean. This may limit the utility of my advice. But Western Australia ought to work well for a Texan.

just checking the voice to text on this phone compared to my old phone. Looks pretty good actually.

Hey Jay! That really is us!

Dogs poop in line with Earth's magnetic field

A paper in Frontiers in Zoology claims that dogs can sense the Earth's magnetic field, and preferentially align to it when pooping. (via Sean Bonner) — Cory • 18 (boing boing)

Donknow 'bout this...Wonder Dog Kate seems to poop in line with the path I'm most apt to take to the backyard gate.

Jay,

That is so fucking awesome!

Years ago The Mote used to have a Wikipedia page all about our birth at Slate and the Great Schism etc. but it disappeared. I have no idea what happened to it. Maybe we just weren't wiki-worthy.

5085. judithathome - 1/3/2014 10:33:40 PM

Who originated/created it? Maybe that person took ownership and withdrew it?

5086. judithathome - 1/3/2014 10:36:15 PM

MsNo...when are you coming back to Fort Worth? We'd love to have you as a houseguest...

I still tell people about how you "discovered" Tuaca for us...and the description of it your friend contributed to the lexicon!

5087. judithathome - 1/3/2014 11:00:38 PM

I know I have mentioned our friend Lunatic David before...well, he has started the New Year with a bang.

We have known LD for 30 years and when I first met him, he was a mess...he dressed like a clown. Seriously.

And he will tell you that he credits ME for making him into the "dandy" that he is today through the magic of re-sale shops.

So today he dropped by with the find of the year...already, on the third day of the year. He will be hard pressed to outdo this treasure...he found a suit for $14.95 at Goodwill...pockets in the jacket still stitched shut...pants unhemmed. The label? GEORGIO ARMANI.

Most beautiful suit I've seen in ages...

Happy 2014 all, may it be an excellent year for you.

This is titled "Selfie with younger self"

(actually my nephew Pete)

5089. alistairconnor - 1/5/2014 2:14:06 PM

Oh and stay warm, midwesteners!

5090. Jenerator - 1/6/2014 11:57:38 PM

Well, the day with the in-laws went better than expected - no confrontations, just the cold shoulder. We brought gifts and food, and in return, we were given coasters while *everyone* else was given $100 each.

At the end of the day, it's funny. :)

5091. Jenerator - 1/7/2014 12:01:55 AM

Judith,

I bought a vintage Burberry trench at an estate sale, once. I paid $3 for it.

5092. judithathome - 1/7/2014 7:29:23 AM

I love deals like that!

My best was a London Fog raincoat w/lining for $14.

What's with all these deals on raincoats? ;-)

5093. judithathome - 1/7/2014 10:47:00 AM

Hmmmm...I posted a response about a London Fog lined raincoat I got for $14...it showed up after I hit post but didn't when I came back in just now hours later.

Strange.

5094. judithathome - 1/7/2014 10:49:32 AM

Okay...I feel like I'm in a showing of "Gaslight"...obviously, the other post is here....I swear it wasn't when I wrote 5093.

Haven't had anything to drink since New Year's eve, either!

5095. Jenerator - 2/27/2014 11:43:29 PM

In a week I will be back in London and Italy. Despite Italy having four prime ministers in four years, the Euro is strengthening there - which is good and bad. Good for the local economy, bad for people like me hoping to travel frequently and purchase a property.
