Please expand. As recently as four years ago, we could still discuss it here...

Good football, and so much weirdness to boot. Apparently, in the Algeria-Russia game, the Russian keeper complained a spectator was shining a laser in his eyes when he let the goal through...

What about it, iii? Did you watch the game?

Belgium 2 - 1 USA.

Perhaps the best in the tournament so far (if you like chaos and never-say-die heroics, and dislike physical violence and drama-queen histrionics. As I do.) USA didn't deserve to win, but it would have been no robbery if they had. Special mention for Tim Howard, who set a World Cup record with his fifteen saves :

All of the round-two matches followed the "heroic underdogs hold out but have their hopes dashed at the last minute" scenario. To the extent that I picked them all.

6657. alIstaIrcOnnOr - 7/2/2014 9:18:29 AM

Are these two men related? Two heroic goalkeepers, both shipped two goals in extra time. One is Raïs M'Bohlhi of Algeria, the other is Tim Howard of the USA. But which is which?

Wow. Freres Jumeaux--or something. I enjoyed the previous posts, Wabbit's horse-racing commentary (my dad loved to bet at Belmont); and the man wItH thE cLocKwoRk oRaNgE spelling of his name. New moniker? Weird, cheri. Très weird.

I would like to say we are all grieving after les Bleus lost, but it was really like, okay, now what's for lunch? Business as usual around here, for pere and fils. personellement, I never thought France would win but I have no vested interest in the game.

I'm behind here, again.

Wimbledon: Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer in a great final 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4 in three hours and 56 minutes, thus regaining the world No.1 spot for the first time since September last year. I was rooting for Fed and was happy to see him make it to the final. In the women's final, Petra Kvitova crushed Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-0 in just 55 minutes.

Le Tour: Henceforth all cyclists will be issued cricket bats for clearing their path of bystanders taking selfies. Riders who succeed in knocking bystanders over will have five seconds removed from their time. Ok, not true. Stage 8 is today and Vincenzo Nibali wears the yellow jersey.

World Cup: Brazil meets the Netherlands today in the consolation match. Argentina and Germany play in the final tomorrow.

crap. Messed up the margins and I'm on my phone. Sorry wabbit! But that video so encompasses this ridiculous self absorption. idiot google/android did some stupid update on its keypad and now the microphone is in a different place and the text doesn't wrap anymore.

Damn, too wide, but I'll leave it.

ME, ME, MEMEMEMEMEEEEEEE, it's all about ME!!!!!!

6664. arkymalarky - 7/12/2014 7:57:56 PM

Thanks wabbit!

6665. wabbit - 7/13/2014 1:25:15 AM

Easy peasy Arky - I'm glad you caught the reference!

World Cup: I was hoping Brazil would get third...alas. The Netherlands secured the consolation of third place at the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ courtesy of a straightforward 3-0 victory over Brazil at the Estadio Nacional.

Recording a third consecutive clean sheet, Louis van Gaal’s charges therefore depart for home – and in the coach’s case, new employment in club football at Manchester United – having avoided defeat in standard or extra time. For Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men, though, there was little to celebrate...

I did see a bit of poor officiating at roughly 67 minutes - a penalty that could have been called against the Netherlands instead went against Brazil for "taking a dive". You make the call.

6666. judithathome - 7/13/2014 8:32:54 PM

Oh well...

6667. judithathome - 7/13/2014 8:33:53 PM

(just HAD to get that #!)

6668. wabbit - 7/14/2014 12:38:07 AM

Never even noticed that number - but I did get my kitchen painted today!

The 2014 World Cup is over, Germany beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time.

Wise Dan wins the Shadwell Turf Mile - on to the Breeders Cup! Grand Arch, a 19-1 shot, finished second, a neck before Sayaad. Kaigun was fourth, another 1 1/2 lengths back, while Seek Again, the 5-2 second choice, ran sixth.

Keeneland results
Belmont results

Daredevil stamped himself as one of the top 2-year-olds on the East Coast with an effortless 2 1/2-length victory in the Grade 1, $500,000 Champagne Stakes at sloppy Belmont Park. Upstart, the undefeated New York-bred, finished second by 12 3/4 lengths over The Truth or Else. El Kabeir, Holy Boss, and I Spent It completed the order of finish.

Treve became the first horse since Alleged in 1977 and 1978 to win consecutive Prix de l’Arc de Triomphes. She was not quite as explosive this year as last, but her margin of victory still was two lengths, and Treve never looked in danger after making the front without being asked at the top of the Longchamp homestretch. From there, Treve bounded home under hearty encouragement from Thierry Jarnet, whose fourth Arc win came 22 years after his first on Subotica in 1992.

Message # 28398 in thread 142 I was rooting for Green Bay, so sorry they lost.

I also agree with Dwayne Allen, "...not a story. They could have played with soap for balls and beat us. Simply the better team. We have to continue to build!"

That said, rules are rules and if they were in violation, the Pats should be smacked hard. However, since QB's, kickers and special teams have their preferences, and since the honest ones will probably admit to breaking this particular rule at one time or another, maybe it is the rule that needs changing. How about this - a team can inflate the ball to whatever they like, but all 12 balls must be the same and the other team must be informed of the weight pre-game. Also, all balls must be tested before and after the game. Kinda like testing race horses, yes?

6671. judithathome - 1/23/2015 9:03:34 PM

I agree with Bob Costas...a rarity since I loathe the pompous asshole...they could have played that game with bricks and the outcome would have been the same.

Much ado....

6672. wabbit - 1/23/2015 11:56:13 PM

For whatever reason, the Pats are hated far and wide. I heard something on NPR this afternoon about a poll that showed the country as a whole believes the Pats cheated, with the exception of a few states in New England. Does anyone else remember when the Pats were so bad they changed the name to New England Patriots from Boston Patriots, so the blame could be spread around?

Are the referees also cheating? They handle the balls throughout the game, don't they know an under-inflated ball when they feel one?

Agree with you JaH, much ado indeed.

I also never understood the rabid haters of sports teams. Geez Louise people, get a grip. I'd rather see a good game where the local team loses but fought hard than a blow-out like the Pats win over the Colts. I enjoy the sports themselves, and while I understand it is fun to root for the home team, do we have to hate someone to prove we're fans? There are plenty of Yankee haters here, excepting Jeter, who is universally liked and respected. But "I hate the Yankees (or any other team)..."? I don't get it.

6673. judithathome - 1/24/2015 8:10:31 PM

How about making supporting the Cowboys a "game-changer" in politics? Cripes, Gov. Christi has been pilloried for liking the Dallas team...there are plenty of REAL reasons not to like him but his choice of football teams to root for is NOT one of them...

6674. wabbit - 4/19/2015 11:27:33 PM

Does anyone else follow bull riding?

6675. arkymalarky - 4/19/2015 11:40:07 PM

I have a former student who does. That's as far as I've ever gotten with it. My dad rode a bull in a rodeo one time. Are you thinking about something regarding that new movie? Or the PBR?
