I'm not worried about whether anyone supports me, but thank you, Dantes.

Judith, I didn't say it was out of line for you to do anything. What I did in my post was recite the facts, and opine that warning him was a bit much. Over and out.

In my opinion, he chose to link it because in doing so he would get under your skin.

777. arkymalarky - 4/5/2003 3:34:07 AM

Anything done to Van will not be based on one post. He knows his situation here very well and his activities have been gaining my notice, little as I've been here, in the last week or so.

I will look the situation over when I get a chance, but it won't be until later this evening.

778. vonKreedon - 4/5/2003 6:57:52 AM

The not linking to other fora escapes me, why not? If that is where information is coming from then it's good to know how many salt tablets to consume.

Regarding Rosie's spamming, I guess he feels the need to take up the Jex slack.

779. magoseph - 4/5/2003 7:40:21 AM

Jex, at least, gave us links and we could read the whole story. Van can't bother to give us that satisfaction.

I would be interested in writing a Wineblog thread. Would anyone be interested in reading it?

This last weekend I started a campaign of visits to organic winemakers, starting with Burgundy. I will be doing the Beaujolais, the Rhone Valley, and possibly venturing further afield, during this spring. I don't know how to write about wine, but it wouldn't hurt to practise. Apart from the wine itself, one meets a variety of strange and interesting people, and the places are generally most beautiful. Photographic illustrations would be provided.

781. Ronski - 4/6/2003 7:16:29 PM

I would enjoy it.

782. Macnas - 4/6/2003 8:01:17 PM

Alistair

Me and all.

783. theDiva - 4/6/2003 9:22:10 PM

yes! Please do.

784. PelleNilsson - 4/6/2003 11:38:54 PM

Excellent idea Alistair. However, discussing wine is a tricky and esoteric task. I take the liberty of providing a few hints culled from the chapter "Winesmanship" in Stephen Potter's classical One-upmanship.

When offering wine take about four minutes uncorking the bottle. Say, '1 think decanting destroys it,' if you have forgotten, or are too bored, to decant it. Keep staring at the bottle before you pour it. When you have drawn the cork, look particularly hard at the cork, and, of course, smell it.

Don't say too much about the wine being 'sound' or ‘pleasant’: people will think you have simply been mugging up a wine-merchant's catalogue. It is a little better to talk in broken sentences and say 'It has . . . .don't you think?' Or, 'It's a little bit cornery,' or something equally random like 'Too many tramlines'. I like this last phrase because it passes the test of the boldly meaningless.

An essential point to remember is that everybody is supposed to take it for granted that every wine has its optimum year up to which it progresses, and beyond which it falls about allover the place. You can give interest to your cheap bottle of plonk by telling your guest that you 'wish he had been able to drink it with you when it was at the top of its form in eighty-nine'.
.
Alternatively you can say, 'I'm beginning to like this. I believe it's just on the brink.' Or I rather like saying, 'I drink this now for sentimental reasons only . .. . just a pleasant residue - but still with a hint of former glories. Keep it in your mouth for a minute or two . … see what I mean?'

785. PelleNilsson - 4/6/2003 11:39:14 PM

Alternatively you may admit, frankly, that your four-and-sixpenny is a failure. 'They were right,' you say. 'The eighty-fours should have been wonderful. Perfect grapes, perfect weather, and the vestre - the Dordogne wind. But for some reason or other they mostly sulked. Taste it and tell me what you think. You may like it.

Then, if there is no hope of persuading your guest that what he is drinking has any merit whatever, you can talk of your bottle as an Academic Interest treat. 'Superb wine, but it has its periods of recession. Like a foot which goes to sleep, has pins and needles, and then recovers. At the moment it's bang in the middle of one of its worst off-colour periods.'

786. alistairconnor - 4/8/2003 5:24:20 AM

Har. Yes, I haven't read the book in many years.

However. What about the thread?

787. alistairconnor - 4/8/2003 6:56:19 AM

... call it Wineblog, and my thread mail is wineblogger@ouvaton.org

788. magoseph - 4/8/2003 7:29:22 AM

I am going to print everything you write, Alistair, for my older son who thinks that I should be an oenologist by birth

789. arkymalarky - 4/8/2003 8:54:07 AM

I'm setting it up (hopefully). Do you want it "read only"?

But if we do this, I must insist that you cover cheap American wines easily accessible to Arkies (and not Weideker).

790. arkymalarky - 4/8/2003 9:05:02 AM

It's there (amazingly). Let me know if you want it "read only" and I will adjust it to that.

791. RickNelson - 4/9/2003 10:08:31 AM

Thank you friend.

Nu deserves a lot of thanks for his poetry. I'm a bit overwhelmed with my desire to laud praise upon the work of poets. It's hard to stay level and hold back so that the praise wont appear quixotic.

Nu has consistantly remained one of my favorite. I reread his poems in the butterscotch link. I know others meander there on occasion.

Again,
Thanks for letting the Poetry thread stay on top for a little while.

792. RickNelson - 4/9/2003 10:21:29 AM

How could I have noticed the dates? It seemed like Poetry was hanging around on top. I didn't look at the dates of the other threads and then posts appeared to reveal my error.

Anyway, maybe this will still give Nu some deserved attention.

793. arkymalarky - 4/9/2003 10:31:29 AM

I think so, Rick. The Mote has been down most of the day until just a bit ago.

794. arkymalarky - 4/13/2003 4:10:18 AM

Joe,

Before the Iraq thread host was changed, complaints about Jex lenths of links and copy/pastes there and in Politics resulted in a week's suspension from which he chose not to return, and Cellar's use of Rose/POJ/Van's name resulted in the same length suspension, and he too has not returned. Van himself is now out, and I personally hope that Cellar and Jex will reconsider and come back in, and Jex will take up a thread offer that was made to him beforehand.

795. arkymalarky - 4/13/2003 4:11:23 AM

Jex's lengths (successions would have been a better word, I guess)
