LITTLE BOOK OF A BIG YEAR, Bono's A to Z of 2014...www.u2.com

I don't know the music but admire him for his politics and for speaking up. There are references to people and events I know zip about but it is funny and serious and insightful.

After reading this I will pay more attention.

Last night I watched a fabulous docu on CNN about the life of Roger Ebert: Life Itself.

It was a hard row for me because I was so appalled by his facial wreckage but I just focused on his eyes which were more lively and expressive than before his many surgeries.

This was a fabulous piece...if you love movies and movie criticism, this is a must see!

One of the movies/documentaries Ebert mentioned was a series that started with 7 Up. It covers a group of children in England and follows up on them every 7 years. Currently, Michael Apted has released 56 Up, the "kids" having hit that short period between middle age and senior status. It's on Netflix and I'm certain the others are, too. I highly recommend this group of films...as did Ebert. We've seen the ones up to the mid 40s.

I'm hoping there's more interest in this set since Boyhood won the Golden Globe as Best picture...

Wow!

The publisher Harper announced Tuesday that "Go Set a Watchman," a novel the Pulitzer Prize-winning author completed in the 1950s and put aside, will be released July 14. Rediscovered last fall, "Go Set a Watchman" is essentially a sequel to "To Kill a Mockingbird," although it was finished earlier. The 304-page book will be Lee's second, and the first new work in more than 50 years.

The publisher plans a first printing of 2 million copies.

A colleague told me about that today. I'd been doing progress reports and hadn't heard. I just got that GH teaching TKAM to 9th graders. As always, they loved it.

Do not miss...

Better Call Saul (one hour) premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. on AMC. The second episode will air in the show’s regular time slot, on Monday at 10 p.m.

Robert, are you still watching? I think it's clever but it seems to be tanking in the ratings....

Has anyone heard of Aloe Blacc? I hadn't until last night when he appeared on Bill Maher's show. His video of Wake Me Up made me cry...and trust me, it takes a LOT to make me cry these days.

Wake Me Up by Aloe Blacc

Here's another one of his that choked me up: Hello World (The World Is Ours)

(okay...test)

re: Saul. The first segment was puzzling, the second made a bit more sense. I seem to recall it was three or four shows into Breaking Bad before I began to enjoy it. I like the Saul character..I think the bit with Mike as the parking lot cashier is dumb. I haven't seen any reviews. Will search.

RIP Mr. Spock

9096. arkymalarky - 2/28/2015 6:29:16 PM

Told my eighth graders that yesterday and they had no idea who I was talking about. Sigh.

9097. judithathome - 2/28/2015 11:41:53 PM

OMG...not even with Zachery Quinto playing the "young" Spock????

9098. arkymalarky - 3/1/2015 2:36:08 AM

No. These kids were born after 2000. My older kids would know and I figure out these will later due to what they're exposed to online, based on what I've seen over the years. They pick stuff up between Jr high and about 10th grade.

9099. arkymalarky - 3/1/2015 2:38:41 AM

But it's hard to interact using references. They're fun in other ways, tho. I had a science teacher colleague who told her 7th graders she had a flea's kidneys in an empty jar she had in her room.
